This patient is now a 17 year old who we first evaluated when she was 13 years old. At that time, she had a 29 degree thoracic curve and a 38 degree lumbar curve. She did bracing and schroth. She had difficulties with both due to availability during Covid-19 as well as not able to wear the brace full time due to her sport (black belt in karate).
Her lumbar curve unfortunately progressed to 53 degrees. They were given options and risks and benefits of a fusion versus AVBT. The family decided to proceed forward with a lumbar AVBT. This was done with a pediatric general surgeon and plastic surgeon.
Post operatively, her 53 degree curve decreased to 26 degrees at the 6 week visit. At the end of growth (Sanders 8), her lumbar curve maintained stable holding at 25 degrees 2 years after her AVBT surgery. She continues to do karate and has no complaints of pain.
