Editorial Review

Reviewer: Edward Abraham, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a second edition book on how to avoid making wrong decisions while caring for children and adolescents needing neuromusculoskeletal care.
Purpose: The aim is to foster best practice principles by conducting safe and appropriate patient care, avoiding complications, and working closely with families and staff.
Audience: The main audience is orthopedic surgeons caring for pediatric patients, but orthopedic residents, pediatric orthopedic fellows, and allied professionals will also benefit. The five high-profile authors, David L. Skaggs, John M. Flynn, Mininder S. Kocher, Kenneth J. Noonan, and Michael G. Vitale are supported by both senior contributors and experienced, opinionated consulting "gurus."
Features: The book is divided into seven sections: basic, trauma, special maladies and concerns, spine, hip, lower extremity, and practice management. Each section is subdivided into chapters. For instance, the nine chapters on special maladies and concerns cover: the limping child, pediatric athlete, cerebral palsy, orthopedic infection, tumors, skeletal dysplasia, and so on. The authors use an informal writing style that is more like having a conversation with the audience. The assigned chapter "gurus" chime in at different times with words of wisdom displayed in blue boxes. Each chapter ends with a pink color-coded box that summarizes brief, bulleted statements on how to stay out of trouble regarding the topic at hand. The two reference lists are referred to as "sources of wisdom" and "for further enlightenment." This edition includes new chapters on sports medicine, early onset scoliosis, the adolescent hip, and leading a team. There is an abundance of color photographs, illustrations, and radiographs.
Assessment: The ultimate objective of this novel work is to advocate for superior and safe outcomes for children and adolescents with orthopedic injuries and disorders. The authors call on their wise orthopedic colleagues to share their personal experiences on best practice tools and complication avoidance associated with patient care. In other words, to "do no harm." Readers who are interested in a more traditional, comprehensive work may prefer the two-volume textbook, Lovell and Winter's Pediatric Orthopaedics, 8th edition, Weinstein et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2021). However, the contributors of this book are to be commended for producing an important, updated second edition. I highly recommend this book and ebook to all orthopedic surgeons and trainees involved in caring for this young population. The legal community is likely to use it as an important reference.
