Columbia Orthopedics Chief of Pediatric Spine and Scoliosis Michael Vitale, MD, MPH and Hiroko Matsumoto took part in an international MAGEC Study Group at the EPOSNA annual meeting in Spain with Dr. John Smith, Past President of the Board of Directors, and Tricia St. Hilaire, Executive Director, of the Children’s Spine Foundation; Dr. Kennth Cheung, President of the Scoliosis Research Society; and Dr. Behrooz Akbarnia, President of the Growing Spine Study Group. The committee discussed a randomized controlled trial for the magnetically-controlled growing rod (MCGR) and creating innovative techniques to treat scoliosis. This technology reduces the number of repetitive spine surgeries for children with early onset scoliosis.
